UPDATE 11/5/2016: Grab a Groupon to climb the Monument
- $7 for a visit for two ($12.70 value)
- $13 for a visit for four ($25.40 value)
You can actually climb to the top of the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon! I had heard about this and wasn’t really that intrigued (I live in Fells after all and almost never see the monument so have never really thought about climbing it) but we were in the area one warm and beautiful Friday and decided to wander inside the monument.
The view from the top:
Turns out there’s a desk manned by someone Wednesday-Sunday and if you pay him/her $6.35 you can climb to the top of the monument! They only allow a certain number of people on the stairs at once (the stairs are SUPER narrow so this makes sense), so I would make a reservations ahead of time online if you’re feeling really committed to get to the top of this thing. Otherwise you can just wing it and drop in. Climbs are scheduled every 20 minutes starting on the hour.
The hours that the monument is open to be climbed are listed on their website as follows:
- Wednesday: 2:00pm – 5:00pm
- Thursday: 2:00pm – 5:00pm
- Friday: 2:00pm – 5:00 pm
- Saturday & Sunday: 10:00 am – 1:00pm, 2:00pm – 5:00pm
It’s 227 steps to the top, which takes about 10 minutes to climb up and 5 to climb down. It’s not the most intense climb in the world, but that didn’t stop my calves from being sore for the next few days!
Do note that children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Also, there are no lockers at the bottom to leave your stuff so be prepared to carry whatever bags you have with you up to the top.
